Nellie sez: Merry Christmas!

Nellie sez: Merry Christmas!

Well, tonight was my last session with the yoga farmgrrls till I come back next spring. I totally lucked out into this great group- this isn’t the only yoga group around, strangely enough. But a friend of the mater’s recommended it to me & I got the last spot. In fact, our fearless leader had been thinking of stopping for the summer, but we ended up w/6 people in JW’s loft room.

Most of the YFG’s live on farms or have lived on farms. One of the strangest things about our group (and there were more than a few strange things…) is that we almost all have ties to Star Tannery, a little dinky town in the mountains. Where one would not expect to find yoga @ the top of the activity list.

Also, where else is the chatter before class about various chicken ailments, herbal salve recipes and Nellie the piglet? A couple wks ago, GM adopted a runt piglet, so we were all treated to digital camera movies of Nellie being cute & smaller than a beer can. (She really is cute- what can I say?) I’m not sure if Nellie or the 4 big greeting-committee dogs are our mascots.

Anyway, I’m going to miss the yogafarmgrrls. Down dog just won’t be the same w/out them.

Well, today I ran into a bunch of folks who’d been laid off locally when the big press (that produces Nat’l Geographic, among other things) downsized. They had all met up for coffee, and were having a terrific time. Having worked their heinies off for 20+ years, they were finally getting the chance to just relax & be friends, rather than co-workers. And they were having a great time. Something is wrong with this picture.

In some ways, I understand that I’m being a slacker and that “real” people have “real” jobs & can’t mess around doing yoga & living on a farm for a few months.  But… what if that’s not true? What if “lifestyle design” (aka slacking) is really where it’s at? Here’s a site that might throw a different light on the issue:  Anyway, I’m looking forward to my next adventures, and meeting up w/folks who are “location independent.”

Here’s some fun stuff:

A nice bowl of soup

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Well, it’s going to get cold again. So I sat in the sun & read, raked some leaves (basically trying to clear a path to the front door from all the black walnuts) and made some split pea soup. Somehow fall just calls for a hearty soup, don’t you think?

Here’s my crockpot split pea soup, in case you want to cook along:

1# green split peas, rinsed
1 hambone or meaty hamhocks, or 2 C diced ham
3 carrots, peeled & diced
2 stalks of celery, w/leaves, chopped
1-2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 bay leaf
1/4 C parsley, chopped
Salt & Pepper to taste
6 C hot water

Put in crockpot in order listed. Don’t stir. High for 4-5 hrs or low for 8-10 hrs. You can add a little sherry @ serving time if you like it. (It’s better than it sounds.)
